The surname originates from Guthrie which is Guthrie, Barony of Guthrie situated close to Forfar in Angus but it has been believed that it comes from Guthrum, a 9th-century Scandinavian prince. Guthrum was the Laird from Guthrie who was along with Sir William Wallace back to Scotland from France in 1299. It marks the only time Guthrie's name is used in the name of the surname which is known. The Guthrie Modern Tartan colors are navy blue, green, and black as well as red stripes.
